First of all, a visitor to Thailand needs to apply for the appropriate visa type that suits the purpose of visit in Thailand. For a Thailand visit for leisure travel purpose, you need to apply for Thailand tourist visa. Tourist visa to Thailand lets short term leisure visitors stay in Thailand for 60 days or less per visit.

Types of Thailand Tourist visa:

Single Entry Tourist Visa : lets its holder enter Thailand once within 3 months from the date of application. The visa holder can stay for maximum 60 days.

Multiple Entry Tourist Visa : lets its holder enter Thailand as many times he or she wants as long as the visa is valid. 60 days maximum per trip is allowed on multiple entry tourist visa.

Not every traveller needs to apply for Thailand visa before their visit to Thailand. Nationals of the following countries need not apply for a visa and can stay for a period of 30 days under the Tourist Visa Exemption Scheme:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bahrain, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea(ROK), Kuwait, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Singapore, Slovak, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UAE, UK, USA, Vietnam.

Nationals of these below stated countries can avail visa on arrival for stays not exceeding 15 days in Thailand:

Andorra, Bulgaria, Bhutan, China, Cyprus, Ethiopia, Fiji, India, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Papua New Guinea, Romania, San Marino, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

For visa on arrival, the following is required to be submitted by the traveller at the designated international immigration checkpoints:

  • A valid passport with 6 months validity and at least 2 unused pages for visa stamping
  • Duly filled Visa on arrival application form
  • A recent photograph of 4x6cm specification not older than 6 months
  • Confirmed return ticket within 15 days from the date of entry
  • Duly filled arrival card and boarding pass
  • Sufficient finance to cover the stay – 10000 Thai Baht per person and 20000 Thai Baht per family
  • Visa fee of 2000 Thai Baht

Thailand tourist visa requirements:

Citizens of countries who are not listed under Visa Exemption Scheme and visa on arrival will need to apply for Thailand travel visa before arriving in Thailand.

  • A valid passport with 6 months validity from the date of arrival in Thailand and enough pages for entry and exit stamping by the immigration department.
  • Visa application form completely and correctly filled and duly signed by applicant
  • 3 recent passport size photographs - 35mmx45mm specification with white background printed on matte paper. 80% of the photo area should be covered by the face of the applicant. The face should be clearly visible. Photos with accessories such as coloured contact lens, eyeglasses or sunglasses, headgear, caps will be rejected.
  • A covering letter by the applicant or the person sponsoring the applicant’s trip stating the reason for travel.
  • Last 3 month’s original bank statements on bank’s stationary stamped by the bank.
  • Air tickets and address of accommodation or hotel vouchers.

If the visa application and the documentation are followed properly and there are no amendments or errors, the visa processing duration usually takes around 3 - 5 working days. Any discrepancy or false information on the visa form or assisting documents may lead to rejection of visa. It should also be noted that possessing a valid Thailand visa does not guarantee entry into Thailand as the sole authority to decide on the same lies with the immigration officer in Thailand.
